Midleton Lions v CI Duffmen in Midleton on Sunday 13/11/22 @ 11:30am

It was a wretched day, lashing rain and blustery at times for our first league game of the season. The lads arrived in high spirits after some good training sessions in the run up to this match. Before the game, Ethan O’Sullivan was named captain for the season, with Rob Cronin his vice. Congratulations to you both lads and good luck in leading the team this year.

The match was a very evenly fought contest throughout and in the first quarter there were chances at both ends, but the defence of Christian Mahony, Paddy Creagh, David Seale, Theo Allen and Fionn Loughnane held firm, displayed great teamwork to thwart CI. 0-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Into the second quarter now and CI began to take control of the game, but Christian kept them at bay initially, but could do nothing to stop a well worked short corner from CI late in the quarter, which was finished off well. 1-0 to CI at half time.

The lads knew that they would have to up their game in the second half and they duly did. Alex Finnegan, Daniel O’Sullivan and Rob Cronin began to assert control in midfield and carved out some openings for the forwards. Alas, during one such attack, we lost possession and CI counter attacked us. Short at the back as we had pushed so many forwards, CI capitalised and doubled their lead. 2-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Backs to the wall in the last quarter now, the lads knew that they would have to conjure up something special to get anything out of the game. All out attack was the order of the day and the lads did just that. Harry Douglas, Killian Brobkorb and Ethan O’Sullivan kept working hard and making good runs up front and at last the teams’ efforts paid off with just 7 minutes remaining. After a well worked move, Ethan found himself in the D unmarked with the ball, pulled the trigger and halved the deficit to 2-1. Could we now go on to snatch the draw?

The lads relentlessly piled the pressure on CI for the remaining minutes and created plenty of chances. With 3 minutes to go, Theo combined with Killian down the right, the ball was played into the D and fell to Harry who finished neatly into the corner! 2-2 with 3 minutes to play, would there be a winner??

Into the dying embers of the game now and the lads continued to pile on the pressure to CI. They won a short corner in the last minute, this was it, last chance. Everybody was up for it. Harry dragged it out to the top, where it was fed out to the right by Ethan. The ball was fed back in towards the penalty spot where Ethan’s shot was well saved by the keeper, but the rebound fell kindly for Rob Cronin who struck it first time on the reverse and into the net! 3-2 to us, unbelievable finish to the game! No sooner had CI restarted the game, the final whistle went, what a game, what a finish, what a result!!

Big thank yous to the supporters who braved the bad weather to come and support the lads and thank you to Liam Bailey and Dylan Sandes for umpiring the game very well.
